Funeral trends have evolved, bringing new values, traditions and perspectives about honouring loved ones. The funeral industry has been ready and willing to adapt, and this will continue as funeral homes support families and their unique needs.
The challenges of the past 12 months have accelerated some trends like embracing digital technology and other trends change with the times. Here are four funeral trends that we believe are here to stay.
Embracing Digital Technology
Digital technology allowing the live streaming of funerals has been around for years. However, it was pushed to the forefront by the COVID pandemic and shows no sign of leaving. Live streaming of funerals allows friends and family members to attend services when they cannot be there in person due to travel restrictions, gathering limits or health concerns. While there was a demand during the pandemic, this trend comforts many and is here to stay.
Unique & Personalised Services
Funeral services have been shifting away from sombre ceremonies to celebrations of life for several years now. Families can celebrate life however they like, encompassing things their departed family member would most appreciate. A personalised service can reflect that person’s hobbies, passions, and interests.
We are seeing trends such as themed celebrations, personalised locations, special music, and food. Helping families create a meaningful funeral experience drives us to do what we do. It helps start a healthy grieving process and allows families to celebrate life their way.
Celebrations of Remembrance
A celebration of remembrance is a funeral or memorial service that occurs weeks or months after it usually would. This is a nice choice for families when coming together immediately following a loved one’s death is impossible. Families can then take time to plan in more detail an event honouring the life of their family member. A celebration of remembrance often honours the deceased after the body has been cremated or buried and can be less formal than a funeral.
Funeral Pre-Planning
Discussing death has become more commonplace. Additionally, many people find that pre-planning their funeral is wise. Pre-planning keeps surviving family members from making hard decisions during a stressful time and gives them peace of mind that their final plans are set. Family and friends will have less to worry about and can focus their time on celebrating their loved one’s life rather than rushing around to organise funeral arrangements.
Pre-planning a funeral does not mean you must also prepay for the funeral. However, many people choose to prepay because it will alleviate the financial burden for their families.
